It\'s All In A Name Empty It's All In A Name

Post  Mjrn Mon May 04, 2009 1:37 am

So I was randomly wondering, what does your name mean? Does it have any special reference to pop-culture [can be your domo or real life name], lets see the crazy stuff we can find!

Mjrn Silverfox, and my real life name Kayla.

Mjrn: Character in Final fantasy 12, Fran's sister.

Kayla: 1999 move "Kayla", Canadian movie about a boy and a husky named Kayla.
-Name of a Beta Island comminuty in Iseral
-Means "one who has not crossed the stream" in Agaw
-Is a unisex name, and is derived from "Kay"
-Means "the keeper of the keys" in old english which is also the same meaning as Kay which was it's male counterpart
-Days of our Lives character "Kayla Brady"
-Kayla in african-american culture means "pure"
-....favoured name for many porn stars and escortes...
-In Hawaiian Kayla means "Crown of Laurels"
-I was named Kayla after two things, firstly the character on Days of our Lives, and my great gram wanted a grandaughter with a "good old Scottish name", she also had a fasination with King Aruthurs Knights and wanted to name me Kaye if I was a boy which is one of the knights names...Then I came out a girl and voila!

Creepiest coninscidence?

In the Xmen comic book series, one of Wolverine's lovers was called "Silverfox", in the 2009 Xmen origins: Wolverine movie she was introduced as a Canadian with the name Kayla Silverfox...tad creepy in my books.

My name, Mark, derives from the Roman god of War, Mars.

.. that's about it. Apparently, because of that, "Mark" means "warlike"

.. yeah, because that's me, alright.. no 63 Docs for me, no sirree.. bring on the hardcore pwnage.. ... *cough*

Incidentally, my initials are M and M, which happens to be one of my favourite candies.

It\'s All In A Name Empty Re: It\'s All In A Name

Post  Celica Mon May 04, 2009 2:59 am

Well this is interesting.... o.o

Celica - why'd I pick this name? I don't think there's any particular meaning behind it but I always liked the look and sound of it, just like the name of the car it comes from. I like Celicas, and while I don't own one I rode in one before...my cousin had a sweet indigo-colored Celica, and it's just...ooooh yeah. XD Not enough space to seat a lot of people inside but meh... XD

The other reason I used this name is because the first time I used it as a screen name I used it in a BoA fan-forum. I used this name again when I played Audition and when Slog found me there well...I decided to use the same name!

I also like using this name cuz it is very similar to my real name, which I will get to....

Cecily - yep, this is my real name. Not a lot of people have this name but I got it because it is derived from my late grandmother's name, which was Cecilia. My grandmother died before I was born and so I honor her name.

It's funny though because I also received her name as my middle name...which is Cecilia. <.<;;; Yes. My name is Cecily Cecilia. Sounds kinda redundant, I know....but having Cecilia as my middle name means a lot to me now.

Taken from behindthename.com:

CECILIA

Gender: Feminine

Usage: English, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Finnish

Pronounced: sə-SEE-lee-ə (English), sə-SEEL-yə (English), che-CHEE-lyah (Italian), the-THEE-lyah (Spanish), se-SEE-lyah (Latin American Spanish) [key]
Latinate feminine form of the Roman family name Caecilius, which was derived from Latin caecus "blind". Saint Cecilia was a semi-legendary 2nd- or 3rd-century martyr who was sentenced to die because she refused to worship the Roman gods. After attempts to suffocate her failed, she was beheaded. She was later regarded as the patron saint of music and musicians.

Due to the popularity of the saint, the name became common in the Christian world during the Middle Ages. It was brought by the Normans to England, where it was commonly spelled Cecily - the Latinate form Cecilia came into use in the 18th century.

Yes...the root of my name means "the blind one/one who is blind." The first time I learned about this I hated it. I actually cried about it once. But then I got over it and accepted it.

Now to get into more serious stuff. I'm Catholic, so I used to go to Sunday school and all that jazz. We practice a ritual called Confirmation where young adolescents become a full-fledged member within the church. One part of that is picking the name of a Saint.

Naturally I picked Saint Cecilia, as mentioned in that name meaning passage above. She was the patron saint of music as it says, more particularly the organ.

What it doesn't note in that passage and from what I learned about her was that when she was to be beheaded, the executioner flopped the job and her neck was cut in three places and she wasn't exactly beheaded and she was still alive. The executioner left her that way and she remained alive for three days preaching the word of God.

Now to funny stuff....all of you who know me and call me Celi...it's fine I don't mind cuz my mom actually calls me that too XD

Okay enough text. XD

Post  Shin Mon May 04, 2009 12:21 pm

Hmmm,
nice topic so...I'll let you all in on my name.
Well, was on vent and talked with Kurai, Seule and Hawk way back when. And she found a meaning to my name I didn't know I had, so here we go.

Dana is my name, yes it is unisex. It is a combination of my mother and father first name so it has significance behind it. General meaning would be some person from a state. But, Kurai found out it meant arbitor which made me do a double take, she found it suited me well and as does Jarod. Intial wise my name spells DIB and my dad is DAB heh.

Why did I pick Shin as my gaming name? Well, a old guildy in closed beta for domo just kept calling me Shin and not Shion. So, I just went with Shin in the end when domo went ob. I heard that Shin had many other meanings but, I'm rambling so I'll end

Post  Kazaa Mon May 04, 2009 4:11 pm

well my in game name, Kazaa, was going to be just Kaza, which is a name i have placed my own person behind. The guild i was in at the time, Surreal, said i should go with Kazaa, so thus the sprite was born, as a MULE, XD now hes my main :3
I later found that Kazaa is a music sharing site, who knew.

My rl name, Cody, doesn't have much meaning behind it. My mom and dad just picked it out of a baby name book...couldn't have given me a more bland name lol

Renai - Just google it :p *coughs at the 1,690,000 results* Oooook, maybe not.
Renai is Japanese for Love, the kanji I believe split to

Ren - Falling in love
Ai - True Love

Soooo yeah :p
Spelt Renee, or Rene, in french, means Irene.

Post  Zion Wed May 06, 2009 7:59 pm

Zion - "Zion" stands for a Utopian place of unity, peace and freedom, as opposed to "Babylon," the oppressing and exploiting system of the western world and a place of evil. (Wikied it)

XIII: "The Thirteenth" Thirteen is an unlucky number, so it kind of contradicts the meaning of Zion.

So I chose ZionXIII because while I was trying to find my own "Zion" in my life, I am usually subjected to bad luck (not that it's unusual for anyone else). So, my own meaning behind ZionXIII is a fragment of me that's trying to search for salvation but is at conflict with everyday misfortune. I embraced the "XIII" because I accepted that I, like everyone else, has to deal with bad luck more than once in our lives, and I kind of think of it as me standing up against all the bad luck that I face, and accepting it all.

Zion had a lot of meaning for me, as it pretty much meant a place where someone could live the life that they wanted without any restriction. I just started using it before I got introduced to DOMO.

Real Name: Andrew

ANDREW
Gender: Male
Means: "Manly"
Usage: English, Biblical

Pronounced: AN-droo (English)
Derived from Andreas (Aner-"man" Andros-"of a man) Wait, so does that mean it's "Man of a man"?....I suddenly question how much I like this name DX

From the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas), which was derived from ανηρ (aner) "man" (genitive ανδρος (andros) "of a man"). In the New Testament the apostle Andrew, the first disciple to join Jesus, was the brother of Simon Peter. According to tradition, he later preached in the Black Sea region, with some legends saying he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Andrew, being a Greek name, was probably only a nickname or a translation of his real Hebrew name, which is not known.

Truth be told, there's not much of a story behind my naming, my dad just liked the name, and decided that as his first child to be born in the U.S, I should probably be named something in English. He came across that name when reading an article about the British Royal family, and decided to name me that. It didn't even occur to him that Andrew means "Manly" >_> I still question whether or not I live up to my name (literally XD)

It\'s All In A Name Empty Re: It\'s All In A Name

Post  Tika_Keiga Wed May 06, 2009 8:45 pm

First naming: Tikal_Neko

Tikal -
Tikal is the largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Maya civilization.
Tikal the Echidna is a character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Tikal Records is a Guatemalan record label.
Tikal (board game) is a popular German-style board game.
M/S Riverdance, previously named M/S Tikal, was an Irish Sea ferry

Neko -
Neko (猫, ねこ) is the Japanese word for the domestic cat.
Neko Entertainment, a video game developer and publisher
Maneki Neko, a Japanese "Lucky Cat" sculpture
Kami Neko, the Shinto cat deity
Nekomusume (or nekomimi), meaning "cat-girl" or "cat-daughter"

In making this name I knew Neko meant cat in japanese. Though I did not know what Tikal meant, for I assume I thought it up in my head.

Second naming: Tika_Keiga

Tika -
# A Nepalese name for Tilaka
# A nickname for Petrika the Albanian variation of Peter
# A title in certain Indian monarchies for a Crown Prince
# A place in Abkhazia
# A place on Saturn's satellite Rhea, named after the last place
A pendant worn in place of the red spot (tilaka or 'tika') on the foreheads of Hindu women. Originally, the red spot was a sign which a priest would paint on the brow of a visitor to the temple. Later the tika became a standard part of the costume of a Hindu woman. The tika can be stuck on or drawn, or, in the form of a pendant, suspended between the eyes. Also known as Maang Tika.

Keiga -
an ethnic group of the Nuba Hills in Sudan. They speak Keiga, a Nilo-Saharan language. The population of this ethnicity likely is below 10,000.

While coming up for my DoMO name I used Tikal_Neko as my base. Eventually I came up with Tika Keiga.

While I consider that there is no meaning behind my name, I am a writer, and thus must come up with unique names often. So take what you will from what I posted.

To me: Tikal and Tika mean forgotten one. Someone who feels like they have lost something important but can't remember what.

To me: Keiga means tragic life. Destined to fall and lose something that's important.

Bonus:

Xecos_Keiga

The account my brother used was named Xecos_Keiga after he asked what he should name it. I gave him the name, which is named after one of my original writing's characters.

To me: Xecos is an abandoned warrior, who lost everything. Yet still finds a way to fight.

PS: My real life name is still secret tongue

Post  Sandry Thu May 07, 2009 7:00 am

Okai....my names. o.o
Dorothy: Meaning, Gift from God. Origin, Greek, English.
Fairly simple, but I like the meaning Razz
Sandry: Okai...this ones tougher as the name doesn't really have a true meaning. It's from a book series (Circle of Magic) but, to give it a meaning, I went with Sandra. ...As this is not a "real" name either, it came down to Aleksandra, which means...defending men. o.o;
So...this makes me a gift from God whom defends men? o.O

As to why I was named Dorothy..my grandmothers name on my fathers side was named Dorothy. My dad was very devoted to her, so it means alot to me.
